COMPANY HISTORY

Tufenkian Artisan Carpets are recognized the world over for their unparalleled handmade character, premium materials, and timeless design. Area rugs expertly made according to ancient artisan traditions, Tufenkian’s Tibetan and Armenian carpets remain vibrant and beautiful for generations, their lifetimes measured in decades and centuries instead of years.
The art of making carpets by hand using the finest materials is cherished and nurtured by Tufenkian. Each carpet is carefully crafted, using methods and techniques that are virtually unchanged from time beyond memory in the service of contemporary design.

The glowing variations inherent in natural materials and the human touch are celebrated by Tufenkian in every stage of the process, the result of a commitment to promote individuality and inspiration in all of its production. Truly, each carpet is unique unto itself, created over the course of a journey through a sea of human hands that weave it into existence.

James Tufenkian began his first business in 1986 with steadfast dedication to keep this one goal in mind. What started as a vision to revive the art of Tibetan rug weaving has, over two decades, expanded to include boutique hotels, artisan foods and a foundation of charitable projects.

Tufenkian commitment to beauty and quality has attracted world-class partner designers, including Barbara Barry, Clodagh, Laura Kirar, Mark Pollack, Kevin Walz, and Vicente Wolf. From award-winning programmed rugs to one-of-a-kind custom designs, Tufenkian Artisan Carpets offer the market’s most enduring value.
