What determined your passion for design?

Seeing a creation completed is the biggest satisfaction. No money in the world can buy that.

Too often in interior design, artworks treated as an afterthought. As someone with a passion to collect art piece, how much role you give to artworks in your design plans? At what point in your design process do you usually select your art?

Usually, artwork itself dictate their position in a space. They have tendency to communicate with you on their belonging. Most of the time, when you see an artwork (depend on its shape, colour, and size) you will instinctively know the most befitting spot to display it.

Other than collecting art, do you do any sort of hobby besides work?

Traveling. My work is also my hobby.

With so many projects on going how do you come up with different concepts for every project?

It usually just flow in as I have been doing this work for 28 years. It has developed into a reflex. Just like an experienced chef who can cook almost anything even in the jungle.

How do you manage your time to manage a few offices in different cities and countries at the same time?

We developed a system, where one partner will concentrate handling 2 cities. Genius Loci have 6 locations in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Surabaya, Chengdu, Shanghai. I, myself concentrated in Jakarta & Surabaya office and part of Singapore. My Partner, Mr. Benjamin Kim concentrated in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur where he is also taking care Vietnam, Cambodia and India markets. Our associate partner Mr. Sun Hao concentrated in Chengdu & Shanghai where the market for all China including Hong Kong & Taiwan.

How do you embrace modern technology in your design?

Technology is already part of our life now. The technology adds value in the speed of design process, construction method, and new materials where we would not be able to produce in the past.

What would you say has been the biggest challenge for you in your career so far?

I will assume finding my replacement in Genius Loci, as we are always looking for the next captain for further expansion.

Do you have new projects on the horizon you are able to share with us?

At the moment, we are working on few international brand 5 stars hotels that is also into product design. As for name and details, we prefer to keep confidentiality at the present moment.
