Established in 2015 by Hana Surya, Threadapeutic is small band of local artisans with a shared passion for fabric reconstruction and a goal to minimize waste.

Threadapeutic produce one-of-a-kind contemporary bags, fashion accessories, home furnishings, and artistic tapestries. All handcrafted from their signature faux chenille textile pieces with fabrics sourced from deadstocks and offcuts from the garment industry,

Threadapeutic’s Signature Faux Chenille Artistic Tapestries collection is carefully composed using fabric offcuts and deadstocks upcycled from the fashion industry, a commitment to sustainability by diverting waste from the landfill and put them to good use.

Offcuts are curated based on colour and texture, then thoughtfully layered and arranged into a single technicolour landscape, before being fine-stitched, cut, and brushed by hand in our studio. A delicate balance of distinct elements, each composition is unique in depth, strokes and hue.

EBBS AND FLOWS FT. KAREN ZAINAL

Fresh off the studio is the latest tapestry, ‘Ebbs and Flows’, a loving tribute to an original artwork created by Ibu Hana’s daughter and avid illustrator/painter, Karen Zainal. Titled ‘Rivers of Living Water’, the acrylic-on-canvas piece was a testament to Ms. Zainal’s penchant for expressive paint strokes akin to ‘automatic’ drawing techniques prevalent in the mid-century abstract expressionist works of Joan Miro and Jackson Pollock.

‘Ebbs and Flows’ consists of sheer fabric overlays stitched together to emulate the layers of acrylic paints as well as the undulated brush strokes on Karen’s painting.

OCULUS

‘Oculus’ was conceived at the height of a COVID surge in Jakarta in July 2021. Armed with a personal fascination towards all things wood, a portrait of a cross-sectioned old wood log was chosen by Ibu Hana. At the tail end of the work, the unintended happened as the tapestry transformed into a mystifying image.

The timber core is portrayed as an enchanting ‘Eye’ with dark tentacles stretching out in a whirling sepia-and-crimson sea of vortex. One couldn’t help but dig a little deeper. Does it suggest pent-up emotions or violence, a volcanic eruption or the cracks of a bullet hole on a wall?

‘Oculus’ is a revelation and a therapeutic exercise for Ibu Hana on the power of the unconscious unfolding like a fan. The initial simplicity of translating a wood surface develops into an expressive medium of the unconscious. Art-making is a form of release. It is not merely a window into the artist’s psyche, but a universal language of self-affirmation and self-acceptance.

HUTAN

‘Hutan’ or ‘Forest’ is a theme that resonates with Ibu Hana growing up with a father in the timber industry. As a timber entrepreneur, her father worked hard to support his six children. She is grateful and indebted to his labor of love and aware that they have taken a lot from Mother Nature.

‘Hutan’ tapestry is an adaptation of a virgin forest in the Java island photographed by Cipto who is a friend of Threadapeutic.

IN GOOD TIME

For everything there is a season. Chilly winters melt into spring blossoms. Rainfall brings forth a new harvest. Darkness welcomes a golden dawn. And a broken spirit is born anew.

BY THE CREEK

Spend a quiet afternoon by a creek, where all you hear is the rippling of water over the pebbly bottom. Dip your toes into the coolness. Watch the ripples grow and dance with the reflections, an invitation for your inner child to come out to play.
